The beautiful Garavogue River is in the foreground. Queen Maeve's mound is just about visible on the top of Knocknarea. For many years the tradition was for climbers to bring a rock with them to add to the "cairn" under which Queen Maeve is supposed to repose. The cairn is an ancient burial site and Queen Maeve's in a very significant and large example of a cairn. It is bad luck to remove a rock. Queen Maeve's father was supposed to have been the High King of Ireland and gave Maeve the West of Ireland as her domain. Close in the image to the cairn is the Cathedral. The cottages on the far side of the Garavogue are on Kennedy Parade. The image dates from circa 1905.
